Random thoughts about technology and philosophy

The proposal

Just to write something softer than my political opinions, tonight I saw “The proposal” a nice movie with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.

It’s a pleasant comedy, and it’s nice to see in English, just a little slang and easy conversations. The movie is not on DVD yet… but you’ll probably find it out there.

Here the trailer:

Get a mac

immagine-2I was told the best way to learn something is having fun, and I think it’s almost true. So take a look at these videos in the series “Get a mac“. Get a mac it’s the Apple advertising campaign with the “cool” mac guy and the loser pc guy.

The poor pc guy tries to do his best to keep up with the mac guy but he always ends up to fail, that’s probabably why in the end the pc guy is much more pleasant ;-)

Enjoy.

Michelle Obama

As many friends know, I’m a big fan of Barack Obama, but actually I never heard his wife talking until a few minutes ago, when I came across this video.

It’s a public speech in the UK, recorded buy the Ted guys and, unexpectedly, she has a very clear pronunciation :)

Geek brief TV

Geek Brief TV is a video podcast, focused on gadgets and new technologies,  produced by two Americans called Neal Campbell and Cali Lewis.

Neal and Cali started their show as an hobby a couple of years ago,  but after a few months they ended up quitting their everyday jobs. They are mac users and mac fan, but they leave room for any cool tech news.

The show is funny and interesting, at least if you’re keen on geek stuff and English is quit easy.

Design as art

I usually say I like three things in life:

  • Women
  • Paintings
  • Science

But my closest friends know that what I really like is beauty. It’s really difficult to talk about beauty in English, it requires an abstraction level I probably don’t really have.

But trying to keep it simple, beauty is the underlying concept that links everything. Word might seem chaotic, but he does have beautiful and elegant math rules, a Cubist Picasso painting might look odd, but it does have beautiful precise rules.

So I run into this beautiful video at www.ted.com, where Paola Antonelli,  Design Curator of Museum of Modern Arts in New York talks about design as a form of art.

She’s Italian so her pronunciation should be clearer than other videos, but she also speaks a very good English.
